Over the summer months, Newquay Foodbank is raising awareness around the symptoms of, and screening available for, the most common cancers: cancers of the lungs, skin, bowel, prostate, cervix and breast.
Why are we doing this?Â
Cancer is the leading cause of death in the southwest but the good news is that it is being treated more and more successfully. Treatment is most effective when it is spotted early but do you know the signs of the most common cancers? Do you know what screening is available? Do you take screening up when it is offered to you?
We want to help all the people we meet – visitors, volunteers and staff in our own and our partner organisations, friends and supporters – to live healthier and happier lives and one of the ways we can do this is by sharing this life-saving information.
How are we doing this?Â
Throughout the summer we will be sharing information in as many ways as possible:
- Our website has information to download – click here for more information
- We’ll be sharing content across our social media channels
- Leaflets will be given out to visitors in our sessions and made available to staff and volunteers
- We hope to engage with a number of local press and media outlets
All the information that we share is coming from one of the leading cancer charities in the UK: Cancer Research UK. We are also able to assist people in finding further help and support.
Zoe Nixon, Director of Newquay Foodbank sees the project as an important part of the wider role of the Foodbank: “It’s vital that we care for the whole person whether they be our Foodbank visitors, our volunteers, our staff or others we work with in the wider community. Cancer is a terrible disease but spreading the word about the importance of catching it early and making simple changes to one’s lifestyle to reduce risk, will help stop so many people and families being affected by it.”
